St. Bernadette's Nursery and Primary School was officially established in January, 1954 by Late Rev. Sr. Dunstan O'Driscoll, OLA - an Irish Reverend Sister of the Our Lady of Apostles Congregation. The School, which started as a convent school, was formally approved by the then Western Regional Ministry of Education and moved to its permanent site at Ibara - A ten acre land.

The dream of the founder was to give a lasting and enduring education to young boys and girls as well as transmission of moral and spiritual values and develop well integrated individuals. Though it started with forty-five pupils and three members of staff running the boarding and day classes, today, after fifty-five years, the school has a population of about two thousand pupils and one hundred and twenty teaching and non-teaching staff.

The facilities of the school include: well ventilated and spacious classrooms, well equipped computer ans Information Communication Technology (ICT) department, well stocked library and a multipurpose sports field.
